Non Attachment

Non Attachment

It's so difficult to not be attached to things, and most of the time we don't even realise!  We do it without realising, attaching our emotions to material things, relationships, careers, wealth, health, beauty and knowledge, but our confidence and happiness should not depend on these things.  We are almost always  being controlled by the ego, with our 'likes and dislikes', 'the wants and don't wants', 'the cravings and the aversion', what we hear, see touch and think.  We get unhappy when we don't get what we like and we get what we don't like, so there is no peace or stillness within.  Being attached draws us away from freedom and connecting with our true selves. So it is good to practise non attachment.

Non attachment is not the suppression or repression of these desires, thoughts and emotions, for this produces a negative outcome in the guise of us being perceived as uncaring, insensitive and self centred.  I'm sure we'd all like to run away to live a detached life, free from anything, but in doing so, we wouldn't learn the lesson of non attachment.

The Sanskrit word for non attachment is 'Vairagya'.  'Raga' means attachment and 'Vi' means not affected.  Non attachment or 'Letting Go' happens in the mind, it comes with practise, of recognising our attachment to things and then gradually letting them go, or fade out.  So it's ok to have all these things, friendships, property, family, money, but not to base our happiness on them.  Accepting ourselves for who we truly are at this present moment, what we're able to do and not do, what we know and do not know, this is who we are, this is our current situation, this is our world, accept it all without judgement.  Allow the change, improvements and evolution to take place, without any fear and worries, intentions and expectations, and you will know the peace, freedom and stillness, you will connect with your true self.
May we all be free and happy x

5th January - Nones of January
The original Roman calendar is believed to have been a lunar calendar, which may have been based on one of the Greek lunar calendars. As the time between new moons averages 29.5 days, its months were constructed to be either hollow (29 days) or full (30 days). Full months were considered powerful and therefore auspicious; hollow months were unlucky. Unlike currently used dates, which are numbered sequentially from the beginning of the month, the Romans counted backwards from three fixed points: the Nones, the Ides and the Kalends of the following month. This system originated in the practice of "calling" the new month when the lunar crescent was first observed in the west after sunset. From the shape and orientation of the new moon, the number of days remaining to the nones would be proclaimed.
